Hydraulic cylinders are commonly found in industrial machinery. It consists of an actuator and uses hydrostatic energy to generate force. Hydraulic cylinders essentially use fluid to create a pulling or pushing force. However, since they contain liquid, they require the use of seals. There are hydraulic seals on most hydraulic cylinders.
Hydraulic seals are gasket-like rings designed to seal areas between the components of a hydraulic cylinder. Hydraulic cylinders contain many different components, some of which are exposed to fluid. Hydraulic seals are used to prevent fluid leakage around these components. Hydraulic seals are designed to insert components into a hydraulic cylinder while forming a leak-proof seal around them.
Hydraulic seals are essentially O-rings. However, they have a groove in the lip that allows them to fit the components they are used with. The groove slides over the component to create a leak-proof seal. Even if the hydraulic cylinder's piston moves and its fluid is pressurized, the component will not leak. The hydraulic seal keeps the fluid in the right container so it doesn't spill around the component.
You will find hydraulic seals in different materials. Rubber is a common material for hydraulic seals. Rubber hydraulic seals are elastic, crack-resistant and durable. There are also polyurethane hydraulic seals. Polyurethane hydraulic seals share many of the same properties as rubber seals, but are generally stronger and better protected against wear. Although not as common as rubber or polyurethane, some hydraulic seals are made from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). PTFE is a synthetic material that is flexible, strong, and resistant to extreme temperatures.
